The Department of Home Affairs is rolling out the new smart ID card and urges residents to start applying. The green ID document will eventually be phased out.
First time applicants, aged 16, need the following when they apply for the smart ID card:
• Birth certificate of the child and the child must be accompanied by a parent, preferably the mother.
• Death certificates are needed if both parents are deceased.
• A court order or a foster care order appointing a guardian.
• ID or smart card of parent or guardian.
No photos are needed.
First time application is free of charge.
Pensioners 60 years and older, as well as other citizens who are first time applicants of the smart card, need to take their green ID or an affidavit if their ID is lost.
A marriage certificate or divorce decree is needed, whichever is applicable.
No photos are needed and it is free of charge for the first application.
A fee of R140 will be charged if the the smart card is lost.
Photos are taken digitally at the home affairs office.
