Learners stand up for their rights during Child Protection Week

Tsakane - Members of the Social Crime Prevention Unit and the Sector 4 manager held a Child Protection Week awareness talk during assembly at Lebone Primary School, last Friday.

The talk was aimed at educating learners about their rights and giving them tips on how to stay safe at all times.

“This initiative is bound to have a great impact on the learners because we are putting them in the forefront,” says principal Sydney Kgope.

“It is great to see support from parents and especially the SAPS.”

Later in the day, the learners and educators, with the support of the community, marched to the Tsakane Police Station, escorted by the EMPD and members of the Ekurhuleni fire services.

The educators all wore black clothing, with a touch of red, and red lipstick in solidarity with victims of abuse.

Learners brandished posters with different messages for the community about stopping abuse and starting to take care of children instead.

Kgope says he believes the impact of the march will have a lasting effect in the community.

Bashin Malinga (49), founder of Basothong Neighbourhood Watch (ward 85), was pleasantly surprised by the turn out.

“We did the ground work in mobilising the community, but I was really overwhelmed with the response.”

The community sang songs of praise to God and to those sending the warning messages to perpetrators of abuse.

Among the community members was ward councillor Sipho Sibiya and the ward committee.

“The station commander, Col Maass, received the memorandum,” says Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu.
