Department hands over new library to Iphahamiseng

Duduza - The Department of Basic Education handed over a state-of-the-art library to Iphahamiseng Primary School on Friday.

This was part of the department’s plan to roll out 1 000 school libraries across the country within a year.

Department spokesperson Mona Niemand says only two libraries were built in Gauteng as part of this programme and Iphahamiseng Primary School was one of the selected schools.

“Research has revealed only 14 per cent of the population are regular readers and only four per cent of parents read to their children,” she says.

“We are encouraging a culture of reading at a very young age.

“There is no excuse for not reading now that the school has a library so the learners must read for fun to improve their language, grammar and reading skills.”

School principal Nomsa Sobele says they are happy they were one of the selected schools to benefit from the programme.

“It pained me we didn’t have a library and it was difficult to encourage the learners to start a culture of reading.

“The library will also assist in homework research, learner development and will support teachers.

“We will also be able to participate in spelling bees and debating competitions,” Sobele says.

Former learner at the school Dr Boitumelo Diale encouraged the learners to work hard and focus on their studies.

“Township education is not inferior and you don’t have to come from a Model C school to reach your purpose in life,” she says.

“Your background should not determine your future but motivate you to become the best.

“You can go anywhere in the world and become what you want only if you work hard.

“Always remember purpose is followed by actions.

“You will not reach your dreams if you don’t fight.”

Dr Diale pledged R1 000 towards buying books for the new library.
