Church shows love to gogos

KwaThema - The New Life in Christ Church hosted 45 senior citizens at Mahon Evangelical for a Mother’s Day celebration on Saturday.

The pastor’s wife Pearl Mnguni says this is an annual event which began in 2013, when the church first had a desire to reach out to the elderly in the community and make them feel special in some way.

“Whenever I visited my own grandmother I noticed that she enjoyed being massaged and having her toe nails cut, and that is when I got the idea for this celebration,“ she says.

The guests were pampered by the youth of the church with foot massages, nail painting, gifts and dinner.

“We show them we appreciate them and in return they bless us,” says Mnguni.

Elizabeth Goxo (63) says she has never experienced so much love.

“We are grateful that, although these are not our biological children, they have gone out of their way to serve us in this way.”

Pontso Nhlapho, organiser of the event, says the elderly are often sidelined.

“None of us would be here if they (grandparents) were not here,” she explains.

Busi Molukanela, the main speaker for the day, encouraged the gogos to continue taking care of their grandchildren.

“I know that sometimes it gets hard and you feel like you no longer have the strength to go on,” adds Molukanela.
