Girl child encouraged to dream big

Tsakane - Pholosong Hospital hosted 70 girls on May 25 as part of Cell C’s Take A Girl Child To Work Day initiative.

Dr Pungie Lingham, the hospital’s CEO, says the initiative will help females break into industries that are historically male dominated.

“You girls will be exposed to positions of power, and be given the tools to access them.”

Take a Girl Child to Work Day is a movement that affords Grade 10 to 12 girl learners the chance to experience a day in the workplace first-hand.

Nineteen-year-old Zinhle Nzama from Geluksdal Secondary School says the opportunity will enhance her ambitions.

“I am really looking forward to learning about the career opportunities that are available to us in the hospital.”

Sphiwe Ngele (16) from Springs Girls’ High School adds that she has always wanted to be a nurse just like her grandmother.

“I want to see what they do and how they work on a daily basis.

But I am certain about my career choice.”

The girls spent the day shadowing different professionals and the executives of the hospital.

Nonhlanhla Precious Ngomane from Buhlebemfundo Secondary School says she is extremely grateful for the opportunity.

“My experience from this day was that I learned more about how we as girls can do more or better than males and that there are more opportunities out there that can come our way, we can still achieve what we want to achieve.”

Sihle Mbonani from Kenneth Masekela Secondary School adds that the day exceeded her expectations.

“I am fulfilled. Girls nowadays have adequate or equal opportunities as males.”
