Police adopt sport to win trust

KwaThema - Primary school learners have been cautioned against participating in criminal activities during the Adopt A Cop Soccer Tournament for sector 1 schools being held at KwaThema Stadium.

The tournament started on May 10-12 and the finals will be held on the 19th.

Four primary schools in the area, Theo-Twala Primary School, Khangezile Primary School, Fred Habedi Primary School and Masimini Primary School, participated in the tournament.

KwaThema police event organiser Constable Percy Modikoe says the initiative is aimed at building trust and a good working relationship between the police and the community.

“We want the community to know we are not enemies but an extension of the community meant to keep peace and safety.

“We also want to encourage and motivate the learners to participate in sports to keep them away from committing crime.

“We are also aiming to encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst community members to help fight obesity,” he says.

Modikoe says through the help of the community they will be able to remove criminals from the streets.

“Some of the police arrest successes we make daily are as a result of the help of the community tip-offs,” he says.

Modikoe says Theo-Twala Primary School played to a 2:0 win against Khangezile Primary School.

“Fred Habedi Primary School played to a 3: 1 win against Masimini Primary School.

“The two teams will lock horns in the finals on May 19 in the finals at KwaThema Stadium from 3pm.

“The teams which lost will play for the third position on the day from 1pm,” he says.
