Businessman offers Grade 12s free online varsity applications

Mali Mashinini is offering Grade 12 learner free online applications to universities at his internet café, Skylight Enterprise.

“I saw a great need in my community, Duduza, because I taught at two of the schools here and I have the resources to assist,” says Mashinini.

He believes, with this service available to them, more learners will apply and be accepted into universities.

On average, it would cost R50 per learner to complete an online application at the internet café.

“We will then worry about registration and funds later because they won’t even get to that point with an application,” he says.

Nhlakanipho Skosana (18) from N.N Ndebele Secondary School says that he is very grateful for the assistance because he would not be able to find his way around the web pages on his own.

“I want to study electrical engineering at either Wits or UJ, and my second option is Biomedicine.

“I hope I get space,” he says.

Lucas Ntuli (18), Grade 12 learner at Thandi Sibeko Secondary School, adds he needed someone to explain the online application process to him.

“Even if I had internet access at home, I would have been lost because the process was more complicated than I expected,” he says.

Nkosana Manyelo, who works as an administrator at the internet café, says some of the learners do not even know how to upload documents.

“I am glad I can help them.”

Skylight Enterprise will assist Grade 12 learners from any school between 5pm and 9pm on week days.

On weekends learners are welcome at any time.
