Maths wiz scores honours blazer

Duduza - Obakeng Pule (9) was awarded an honours blazer by Principal Nomsa Sobende at Iphahamiseng Primary School in front of all his peers during assembly on Monday morning.

Sobende says Pule is the overall top achiever in the whole school for the first term.

“The award is my brainchild.

“I want the learners to have something tangible to compete for every term,” says Sobende.

The blazer will be awarded to the top achiever every term, so Pule needs to maintain his excellent score in order to keep the blazer for the rest of the year.

Pule says he feels great because he worked very hard to achieve good grades.

“I take my education very seriously because I want to be a scientist,” he says.

His favourite subjects are mathematics and physical science, for which he scored a level 7 (80 to 100 per cent).

“I have to say that in the 30 years that I have been a teacher, this is only the fourth learner who I can say is a genius,” says Sibilone Thabethe, Pule’s maths teacher.

Thabethe says although he only joined the school last August, he was immediately captivated by the boy’s academic excellence.

“I entered him into the Maths Olympiad in October, where he reached the regionals and only lost first prize by a margin.”

He says Pule is unstoppable.

“He is so respectful and he has a great support system at home.

“I expect him to excel in everything he does after Grade 12.”
