Implementation of new road regulations starts tomorrow

Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters is taking the country's road death toll seriously with the implementation of new road regulations imminent.

The first of these changes comes into play on May 11.

The new regulations will prohibit transport drivers from transporting children in the luggage compartments of their vehicles.

Drivers will also be stopped from carrying more than five passengers per load.

More stringent speed regulations have been put in place for heavy goods vehicles above 900 gross vehicle mass (GVM), stating such vehicles will be banned from travelling on public roads during peak hours.

It is said some of new regulations will include a review of the current K53 test.

Drivers will also have to undergo a practical re-evaluation when renewing a licence.

Speed limits will be reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h in urban areas, from 100km/h to 80 km/h in rural areas and from 120km/h to 100 km/h on freeways running through a residential area.
