“Initially I thought people from the Metro were working on it, but there was no barrier tape to indicate danger,” she explains.
Gumbi says she also expected it to be closed soon after.
The main drain is situated less than five meters from the tarred road, on Masinga Street, Tornado.
“I am especially concerned about the children who play on this street every day. Someone could fall in here and die. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

The gaping hole also poses a threat to people who maybe be walking late at night.
“The area is not well lit at night, which is another issue. But the gap is big enough for an adult to fall in.”
Gumbi says since the cover is made of concrete, it is very heavy, which makes it nearly impossible to move back into position.
Ward councillor Thulani Simelani says he has not been notified about the situation.
“I will call the Ekurhuleni Metro call centre and lay a complaint. I am sure it will be attended to promptly,” he says.
