Chief-whip helps learners improve grades

KwaThema - Chief whip of Council Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi revisited Tlakula High School to monitor the learners’ progress in their studies in KwaThema on Tuesday.

This was part of his commitment to ensure that this year’s matric results improve.

The school performed poorly in last year’s matric exams, dropping from a 72.44% to 58% pass rate.

Dlabathi said earlier this year that he had decided to adopt the school.

“We enrolled 90 learners across Ekurhuleni into the Ntsane Masiloane School Enrichment Programme, to be assisted in mathematics, physical science and accounting.

“A school principal delivered a school progress report for matric first quarter with pure maths 60%, accounting 79% and physical science 95%.

“The feedback shows that the learner enrichment programme is helping the learners to improve their grades,” he says.

Dlabathi says he believes maths and science have the potential to assist in dealing with the lack of technical skills in the country.

“The aim is to improve this year’s results to 90%” he adds.

“There was a concern regarding the learner performance in maths literacy, which had indicated a low pass rate of 20%.

“However, an intervention to assist those learners who are falling behind is being initiated,” he says.

Dlabathi also met with the director of Ntsane Masiloane School Enrichment Programme as part of the monitoring and evaluation of learner performance in the first quarter.

According to Ntsane Masiloane School Enrichment Programme director Ntsane Masiloane, the learners are showing a dramatic improvement.

“In the beginning the learners were battling with mathematics and science.

“They were scoring below a 20% pass rate. However, through the intervention the learners have started to show signs of improvement.

“They are developing confidence in and a love for maths and science,” he says.

“We are pleading with parents to continue supporting their children by playing an active role in their studies,” he says.
