Pholosong hosts career day

Tsakane - Pholosong Hospital invited learners and the community to celebrate its 25th anniversary by hosting a career open day last Wednesday.

The hospital’s main aim on the day was to inform the youth of the opportunities and careers available to them, and to introduce its services to the public.

According to Master of Ceremonies Jerry Tseki, “Science is organised knowledge. Wisdom is organised life.”

CEO Dr Pungie Lingham says, “One of the major challenges we face is that, although the population is growing, the facilities to help the people remain the same.”

It would benefit the community, he says, if the learners aspired to take on careers within the hospital in the future.

“We expect that those of you who are here today will be ambassadors for Pholosong to your neighbours and give them all the information you get today.”

Sister Fikile Mabuza, nursing manager of the hospital, emphasised the importance of going to clinics first, not hospitals.

“There are procedures to be followed. Clinics provide primary health care and most people can be helped there.”

Mabuza says if a patient needs more intensive treatment the trained professional at the clinic will then refer the patient to the clinic.

She also urges women to register at the antenatal clinic as soon as they discover a pregnancy.

“So many situations can be avoided if the mother to be comes in for check-ups and takes the treatment we provide,” she says.

Mbalenhle Mnguni (17) from Buhlebemfundo Secondary School says she was exposed to so many more careers than she knew existed within the hospital.

Another learner, Nqobile Nkosi, says that she already knew she wanted to study medicine but now she knows which field she wants to specialise in.

“I enjoyed the theatre/surgery presentation. That is what I want to do,” she explains.

Sixteen-year-old Ntokozo Yende says she is confident her career path lies in psychology.

The hospital also committed to taking part in the Take A Girl Child To Work day, on May 25.
