Asiphepheni holds fun day

KwaThema - Asiphepheni Community Project put smiles on the faces of a few vulnerable children from Mzumbe and Nkhancwa informal settlement last Wednesday.

Martha Goge, the project manager of the organisation, says they aim to serve the community as best they can.

“We had to contribute our own money and resources to make this possible,” says Goge, adding that many of the business owners in the community always pitch in to help with the food parcels they prepare for the children.

“Although we used to have a big sponsor, now we do things on our own,” she explains.

“We do this because we are passionate. We won’t let the children go without essentials.”

Asiphepheni is made up of two groups of volunteers.

“Peer educators teach people about HIV and TB, and how to deal with those affected by the illnesses. “And sometimes we have to refer people to clinics if they have symptoms,” says Goge.

She says that the second group, home based care workers, do home visits.

The carers monitor how people take their treatment.

“They also assist with prenatal care, sometimes,” says Goge.

She says Asiphepheni needs more support.

“Realistically, we cannot keep going without a sponsor.

“We want to have many other projects.”

She explains that many of the volunteers have quit because of the lack of sponsorship.

“I understand because it does take a strain over time.”

She says that she is happy that they were able to put the fun day together for the children, even with the challenges.
