Duduza SAPS search for suspects after ATM robbery

Duduza - Police are investigating a case of business robbery after an ATM was robbed on Thursday.

The ATM, situated on the corner of Lekope and Letsapa streets at the Majola shopping complex, was robbed and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

SAPS spokesman Sgt Harry Manake says they believe the criminals gained entry from the roof of one of the shops and accessed the back of the ATM, where they used grinders to cut open the safe.

According to the shop owner, who operates a hair salon, she closed her shop at about 8pm and ensured that the window and doors were properly closed and locked.

“She was surprised, when she returned to her business the next morning, to find the roof torn down and bricks scattered on the floor,” says Manake.

The ATM is visible from her shop and when she noticed it had been robbed she called the police.

Manaka says at this point in time there is no information available, but the police are doing everything to trace the suspects.

“We are always visible in the shopping centre and visit the ATMs at regular intervals, which is the suspected reason why the criminal may have opted to go through the roof and access it from behind, inside the shop,” he says.

No arrests have been made.
