Art group fights social ills

KwaThema - Asivukeni Arts Collaboration offers young people a platform to showcase their talent on stage.

The centre offers young people in the area training in acting, dance, visual arts, poetry, creative art and music.

The founder of the centre, Sibusiso Malau (35), says he decided to open the centre three years ago after realising that many artists in the area don’t have a home.

“There were many young people who were talented but they didn’t have anyone to mentor them.

“They ended up throwing in the towel and getting involved in illegal activities because they believed they were receiving attention from that environment,” he says.

Sibusiso says he and a friend, Nhlanhla Mkhwebane (35), decided to invite young people to join the centre.

“We offer them formal training to help direct their skills on stage. We also invite seasoned artists to motivate them.

“We want them to express themselves on stage on issues that affect them daily, such as drug and alcohol addiction, crime and peer pressure.

“We are proud that we are making the change we want to see in our community and contributing to the fight against social ills,” he says.

Sibusiso says the group performs at different events in Gauteng.

“We also focus on awareness campaigns, which include road safety, substance abuse and teenage pregnancies.

“We would like to see the group expanding to other provinces in the country and changing lives.

“People who are interested in booking the group to perform at their events can contact us on 061 603 4825 or 073 581 9902,” he says.
