Parents want answers after newborn leaves hospital in bandages

Tsakane - Nnana Mokoena says that she was shocked to discover that her newborn baby had an injury before they even left the hospital and no one could explain what happened.

Nnana, who was admitted to Pholosong Hospital for a cesarean section, says she was sedated during the procedure.

“There were complications as I felt pain soon after the doctor opened me up.”

She was then put under anaesthetic and did not, therefore, see her baby right after she was born.

Nnana claims when she woke up she asked for her child but did not see the baby until the next day.

Her husband, Doctor Mokoena, says when he arrived at the hospital his wife was still asleep and the baby was not with her.

“All the other mothers in the ward had their babies with them and I became afraid that something may be wrong,” he adds.

When he asked one of the nurses where the baby was he was told she was in another ward.

Doctor claims he went to look for the baby in the other ward but was denied access.

“From then there was tension because I knew something was wrong.”

Nnana says when she finally saw her child, her little leg was in bandages.

“When I asked what was wrong with my baby’s leg I was not given a straight answer. It was as if no one really knew.”

“I just wanted to know what happened.

“If my child was born with a defect, it would not change anything.

“I just needed an explanation,” says Nnana.

Baby Barateng and her mother have since been discharged.

*Pholosong Hospital has been made aware of the allegations. The hospital’s communications officer, Thabisile Mkhwanazi, says: “At this point we do not have a full report as an investigation is pending.”
