Church help fight drug addiction

KwaThema – Members of the Praise and Worship Bible Ministry have united to help fight the scourge of nyaope in their community.

This is being done through their ‘Sizoyinqoba Lempi’ initiative which officially kicked off over the weekend.

Pastor Millicent Rapodile says the aim of the initiative is to make sure young men feel that they are still part of the community.

“Change can happen and we have not turned our backs on them,” she says.

She says that they welcomed 14 addicts to their church.

“We offered them a home-cooked meal, motivated them and addressed the dangers of drugs.

“We wanted them to feel the love and this might help them in changing their ways,” she says.

KwaThema Police spokesman, Thabo Sibuyi, says they welcome the plan to help fight drug addiction in the area.

“If we are able to fight drug addiction we will be able to root-out crime.

“The more there are such initiatives in our community, the more the amount of crime can go down,” he says.

Sibuyi says that together with church members, they have suggested equipping the addicts with skills.

“We are going to start small with gardening and the addicts will assist so that they can gain skills, eat and sell the vegetables to help sustain the project,” says Sibuyi.
