Fake fingerprint officers allegedly wipe away evidence

KwaThema – Police have issued a firm warning to locals to be cautious of people claiming to be police fingerprint experts.

This follows a house robbery which occurred in Sam Ngema Drive, on Sunday between 9am and 2pm.

Police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibula says the house was broken in to and a TV set, laptop, pair of shoes, an undisclosed amount of money and a DVD player, to the value of about R31 000 were stolen.

“On the same day, unknown men claiming to be officers from the fingerprints department went to the home where the crime had been committed.

“They allegedly destroyed fingerprint evidence by pouring some form of power around the scene.

“They also promised the homeowner that she would get a case number, but she never heard from them again.

“She decided to go to the police station to inquire about the case number and that is where it was discovered that these people were false policemen,” he says.

Sibuyi says it is important for residents to make sure that those claiming to be police officers present proof to this effect.

“They should be in a marked car and carry an appointment certificate.

“If the car is unmarked, they must still have the certificate which has a photo of the officer, the SAPS badge and the initials and surname of the officer on it.

“The back of the card should include the date of the appointment along with initials, surname, ID number, rank of the officer and the signature of the national commissioner,” he says.

Sibuyi says that the matter is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
