Fighting drugs through awareness

Tsakane - The members of the SAPS and other stakeholders recently held a substance abuse awareness campaign in Geluksdal.

The purpose of the campaign was to discourage the community, especially the youth, from taking drugs.

Tsakane police spokeswoman Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu says they were playing their part in helping the community to fight substance abuse.

“Many young people in the community are addicted to drugs.

“We believe that through regular communication we will be able to fight substance abuse in the community.

“They end up committing crime to be able to afford to feed their addiction,” she says.

Lerato says that on the day they were also educating the community about the importance of refraining from drugs and crime.

“Through police visibility in the community we are able to build strong relationships and trust.

“We will not be able to fight crime without the help of the community,” she says.

Lerato added that they encouraged addicts who are ready to clean up their act to come to the police station for help.

“We will link them to the available help, which includes the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA),” she said.
