Police warns of scam: Callers attempt to retrieve banking details via cellphones

Tsakane - The police have provided the community with tips to avoid falling victim to banking scams when callers attempt to retrieve banking details over the phone.

Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu, Tsakane police spokesman, says the community should not give their banking details to anyone who requests them over the phone.

Also, don’t take instructions from any callers asking you to switch off your phone.

“The caller would ask you to switch off your phone, so that the service provider would be able to protect your personal information.

“Once you do that, the SIM swap is performed, which gives the caller access to your cellphone banking details,” she says.

Mngomezulu urges the community to adhere to these tips to avoid falling victim to this scam.
