Youth empower themselves

Young people in Daveyton are being the change they want to see in their community.

They are the proud owners of a Koditekking pop-up store, located at the corner Mooki and Elselen.

The founder, Bheki Malindi (36), says that the idea to establish the store was born in 2008.

“I had lost my job and had a family that depended on me financially.

“A friend told me about a shop that sells cheaper shoes in Joburg,” he says.

He says he decided to gamble their last pennies and bought five pairs of shoes.

“We started selling them from door to door.

“The community responded positively and we sold out in the first few days in business,” he says.

He says that the residents started placing orders and bringing pictures of their favourite shoes.

“The business was growing and we could no longer walk from house to house.

“We decided to identify a spot in the community by the busy roadside, where we opened the store.

“Because the business was booming, I had to hire more young people in the community to assist me,” he says.

He says that his plans include expanding the business to other townships in Gauteng.

“We will be able to create more employment opportunities,” he says.

He adds that they also offer credit and lay-by.

Store assistant Desmond Modiselle (38) says the shoes are sold at a reasonable price that everyone can afford.

“We also sell at the factory sites, local malls and other business sites,” he says.
