Local talent to represent Gauteng

Kwatsaduza - Aphiwe Blessing Ndaba (24) has been nominated for a National Community Radio Award, which is his greatest accomplishment thus far.

The Payneville star explains that he is currently working as a technical sound engineer at a local community radio station in Tsakane.

He says he has learnt a lot through this experience, including dealing with copywriting and being a voice-over artist.

“While working at the station last year, I heard of the National Community Radio Awards being conducted by National Community Radio Week.

“All community radio stations were invited to enter, so I applied in the Best Radio Audio Packaging category.

“When I made the cut as one of the top five nominees in this group, it was a great feeling.

“What makes it even more special is that only two of us in this category are representing our province, so it’s truly humbling, a great honour and achievement and a stepping stone for my career,” he says.

Ndaba says growing up he didn’t have much access to TV at home, so he would listen to the radio. As he listened, he often found himself imitating the presenters and DJs from a young age.

This sparked a greater love of meaningful songs, titles and poetry, and a desire to help inform and entertain people.

He describes himself as a shy person, but it seems the things he loves doing always seem to put him in the spotlight.

“As I grew up I finally realised I wanted to take up a career in the entertainment industry while serving the community.

“So I decided to further my education in media studies, obtaining my diploma.

“I majored in radio broadcast and sound engineering and thereafter went to work for a local community radio station, which is where I am now,” he says.

The lad sees this nomination as his greatest accomplishment and thanks his family and colleagues who encouraged him to enter and to dream big.

“I also thank God, as it feels like He is showing me how awesome He is when you truly put your trust in Him.

“My hope is that this will help inspire others and make them remember that it doesn’t matter where you come from in life, don’t lose hope or put a time-frame on your dream, and that anything is possible,” he shares.

Ndaba’s future plans include working at a national radio station and gaining some international experience.

He is also preparing for the award ceremony, which will take place on February 17 in Bloemfontein.
