Passer-by accidentally shot

Duduza – Local police have arrested a young man (21) for playing with a firearm, after he accidentally shot a passer-by in the left leg.

According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday at about 10.30pm while the suspect was playing with a firearm.

“He was raising the firearm and displaying to his friends that he knew how to cock it open.

“The firearm suddenly went off, firing a single shot that hit a passer-by who was walking along Tambo Street.

“Realising that he had shot someone, the man ran off and hid himself in a shack,” says police spokesman Sgt Harry Manaka.

He adds that the police responded quickly and were able to trace and arrest the young man. The firearm was also recovered.

The suspect was charged with attempted murder and being in possession of an illegal firearm.

“We urge people not to play with firearms as they are very dangerous.

“People should be aware that it is illegal to even carry a firearm without valid permit to do so.

“We also take note that there are illegal firearms which are in the hands of the wrong people and ask the community to report such people,” he says.
