Local garage donates school uniforms

KwaThema - Thirty learners from Masimini Primary School have received full school uniforms from a local garage.

The children are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

School principal Khosi Nkosi says that they are grateful for the donation.

“Most of our learners are from poor households, while others are orphaned.

“It is painful to see them dressed in torn and worn-out school uniforms, especially on cold days.

“Some of them end up becoming bullies because they are trying to defend themselves and do not want to be teased by the other learners.

“This affects their self-esteem to the point that some learners end up bunking school,” she says.

She says that now that they have new uniforms, they will be able to fit in with the other children and play freely without feeling small.

Grandmother Mavis Masina (60) says that she is happy about the donation.

“I take care of my three grandchildren, who are orphaned.

“There is no one working. We survive on my pension grant and their social grant, which is not enough.

“We cannot afford luxury like brand-new school uniforms every year,” she says.

Masina says that she has been trying to save up money to buy her grandchildren school jerseys.

“I always fail because there is always something more important to cover.

“It broke my heart that they had to wear old school uniforms.

“I prayed daily for help and I am grateful that my prayers have been answered,” she says.

The local garage manager says that this is the first leg of the project.

“We have through the years been donating clothes and food to other initiatives.

“This year we decided to give back to the learners of Masimini Primary School because they support our business daily.

“We are encouraging the business people in the area to join us in giving back to the community,” she says.
