Four murder suspects in police custody

Duduza – Local police have arrested four men in connection with the murder of a tavern owner in Sobukwe Street, Masechaba Section, on December 3.

According to police spokesman, Sgt Harry Manaka, the deceased is Xolani Tilana (34).

He was allegedly stabbed and hacked to death with a panga when he tried to intervene and separate patrons who were fighting in his tavern.

“Duduza detectives traced and arrested the four men last Thursday in Masechaba. The police had been searching for the four men ever since they fled the scene of the crime,” says Manaka.

Tilana’s fiancé, Nonhlanhla Fakude, has welcomed the news, saying Xolani did not deserve to die like that.

“Xolani was a good man who always tried to prevent armed people from entering his tavern. He always maintained order.

“At least now I am relieved that the four have been arrested, because I was no longer free, knowing that they had not been detained.

“The only thing left is to hope that justice will be served and that they will be sentenced, though that won’t bring my fiancé back,” she says.

The four suspects made a brief appearance at the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Monday. However, the matter was postponed.

They will remain in police custody at the Nigel Prison until their next court appearance.

Manaka adds that Duduza police are doing everything they can to ensure the safety of the community. He says all culprits who are arrested will be brought to justice.

He urges the community to continue coming forward with information to help them solve more crimes in the area.
