Creating a safer road for young ones

KwaThema – Passion has propelled local resident Thabo Moshweu (50) to give up his time to ensure that children are safe when crossing Vlakfontein Road.

For five years, Moshweu has been doing this act of kindness in the mornings and afternoons.

He explains, “I live in KwaThema and used to volunteer as a peace corps and CPF member years ago.

“One day, while crossing at Vlakfontein Road, I saw a child being knocked down by the driver of a car.

“So since I had already been trained in the past as a pointsman around 2008, I decided to put that knowledge to good use,” he says.

Moshweu then started directing traffic between 6.45am and 8.15am and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm voluntarily.

He does, however, admit that it has not been an easy task.

“At first some people did not want to co-operate with me, which meant I had to sometimes stand in front of cars, just to protect the children.

“But as time has gone on, people’s mind-set has changed for the better.

“Even the community is more positive about what I am doing for these young people,” he says.

Some of the challenges Moshweu says he comes across while doing this job include seeing adults crossing at unsuitable points on the road or at the wrong time.

Children then see this and think that it is appropriate to do the same things, which ends up putting them in danger.

“On the positive side, however, it is great to see that over the years motorists have changed their behaviour patterns and now stop when they see children crossing.

“I encourage pedestrians to try and cross at the zebra crossings or when it is safe to do so.

“Further, motorists should also slow down and not overtake other vehicles when it is unsafe or when pedestrians are crossing,” he says.
