Committee intensifies drug fight

Duduza - The Duduza local drug action committee (ALDAC) once again showed its commitment to fighting and reducing drug use in the area.

This was done by organising and hosting the sports against drugs event.

The event was hosted at the Duduza Stadium on Wednesday, when drug users were invited to participate in different sporting activities including soccer, netball and chess.

“About 60 drug users came in and participated – and most of them showed amazing talent and skills in sports.

“The sole purpose of the event was to encourage these young people to engage in sports and to keep them fit, so that they can fight and resist their addiction.

“Young men and women with a lot of talent were seen and reminded that all is not lost, when you’ve taken drugs in your life and that by playing sports, they can save themselves from the scourge of nyaope,” says Duduza police spokesman Sgt Harry Manaka.

He further explains that Aldac is a forum established from various departments in government such as SAPS, Department of Social Development, Sanca and Ekurhuleni Metro, together with other non-governmental and non-profit organisations, such as the Duduza Development Centre and Duduza Chess Club.

“These structures share a common goal, which is to assist the community by coming up with programmes and projects aimed at reducing and eliminating drug use.

“Through sports, we hope to see more of our youth coming back from drugs and be future role models.

“It’s heart breaking to see such young talent being wasted through drugs and substance abuse, therefore Aldac hopes to host more events that will include participation of the ‘so-called drug users’, in Duduza in the coming year,” he says.
