Fiky pursues his dream

Kwatsaduza – Gospel star Mfanufikile ‘Fiky’ Mngoma is no ordinary artist.

The youngster left his career as a journalist and lecturer, to pursue his dream of making music and has never looked back.

“I realised from a young age that this was what I loved to do when I sang in the school and church choirs. But I only started doing it professionally on stage at the age of 16.

“I was born in KwaThema, moved to Daveyton and now reside in Tsakane and was brought up in a Christian family.

“And after moving around various schools and locations, after matric I took a gap year then went to complete a diploma in journalism,” he says.

From there Fiky lectured for about six years, but throughout that stage, he could not keep the inner voice quiet that kept telling him to go and sing.

“I resigned when the music bug finally caught me,” he says.

The singer then began his journey at the bottom, as a backing vocalist for Joyous Celebration artists Vicky Vilakazi and Bheki Mlomo to name a few.

His musical career has seen him visit several countries.

He has also been involved in a house music project before, but says gospel is where his heart belongs.

“I have been in the music industry professionally for seven years, but have been a solo artist for three years.

“In addition, I have worked on numerous gospel shows as for me, gospel is a way of praise and worship.

“And for some odd reason, though I have always known I had this calling, I did not take it seriously until now.

“What I love about being an artist is that I can express myself through my music,” he says.

Fiky is currently working on his gospel album which he says he hopes will give hope to worshipers.

“Sometimes we give up because we are hurt, but we need to stand up, dust ourselves off and not give up on the cross,” he says.

“We must be representatives of Christ and Christianity should be a lifestyle,” he says.
