Coordinator of the Behind the Blazer Film Project Nelisiwe Thwala explains that the project was founded by Vusi Thwala and has been running for more than five years, with the passion of promoting arts.

“We are a non-profit organisation, dedicated to enriching young minds through local cultures and supporting the industry in driving story-telling throughout the country, through different communities and reaching new audience,” she says.

“Therefore, through this first official ‘Behind the Blazer Film Festival’, we highlighted the very best of film-making from different high schools, with different backgrounds and experiences.

“The festival, which is an annual event, also showcases the films made by South African high school learners from the vibrant townships, developed cities and rural areas.”

Thwala adds that the initiative has encouraged learners to explore a broad range of topics that affect our students in schools, communities and at home, and stir our hearts and minds.

Tholulwazi Secondary School won the best story line, while Kensington High school took the best film title.

“Thank you to all the school learners who participated in the event, and their judges, from Big Fish School of Art and Just You Model Agents,” Thwala says.
