Teen girls make the town proud

Two girls from Springs and KwaThema received the honour of being appointed as care sister at the Miriam Makeba Centre of Girls.

Two good friends recently competed in the Miss Teen Kwatsaduza pageant where both shone brightly.

Participating in only her second pageant, 14-year-old Selection Park resident, Imani Ngqukuvana, was crowned Miss Teen Kwatsaduza, while Lebogang Ndlovu from KwaThema was the runner-up and first princess.

Mrs South Africa Globe, Sandi Maqoqa, attended the event and invited the teenagers to Miriam Makeba Centre for Girls, which is a home for destitute and/or abused girls between the ages of 11 and 18 years.

Both the girls were named as official care sisters at the centre and will be spending time mentoring the resident girls.

Mister Africa 2016, community developer and philanthropist, Phetolo Mohale, who manages the girls, says that once his students reach success on the local level, they are required to participate in community service projects for one year before they are allowed to participate in national pageants.

“It’s not just all about the glitz and glamour,” he says.

In 2013, Phetolo started spearheading fund-raising events at Tsakane Primary School.

He then opened his own modelling school for disadvantaged children from townships.

This afforded him the opportunity to travel to Germany and Turkey with his modelling students.

Both teenagers want to continue modelling after high school.

Lebogang has participated in six pageants and was named Princess of Africa in 2016.

She currently attends Kenneth Masekela Secondary School where she received distinctions in all of her subjects and was named the top learner in her grade.

Imani attends Springs Girls High School.
