Enrichment centre built for local school

Tsakane - Business people have come to the party to help the Michael Zulu Primary School in ensuring that effective learning takes place.

This was done through the donation of a learning centre built with the help of various donors.
The official opening of the centre took place last Friday.

Present were parents, the school governing body, Gauteng Department of Education officials, Department of Health officials, local councillors, donors and the leadership from neighbour schools.

“As a school we operate as a full service which means it accommodates both learners with and without barriers.

“Therefore the aim of the centre is to help those learners facing challenges.

“This will be done by giving these children individual attention to ensure that effective learning is taking place, thus improving even the results at high school level,” explains school principal Lindiwe Vilakazi.

She also expresses her joy about this great event, saying she had dreamed about it for a long time and is happy it has become a reality.

Vilakazi shares the journey the school staff went through to get to this point.

“As children have different challenges we were offered numerous opportunities and ways to assess which ones had learning barriers.

“The Gauteng East District of Education also gave us strategies and programmes to assist and we went for training.

“And through all this we met some people such as clinical psychologist Gerald Williams, Brian Sleigh and companies that have helped in the development of the learners and structure so they can have a conducive learning environment,” she says.

One of the companies donated R100 000 for the building and to assist for the next three years.

The other contributed over R50 000 to finish off the project as the money was not enough.

A local business also helped in building the structure and another is helping with learning materials.

“We started using the programme and the enrichment centre last year and know this will also have a huge and positive assistance in Grade 12 exam results,” she says.

The numerous donors who spoke shares why they came on board and why it is important for them to assist in developing young minds.

SGB representative Rachael Kokwana says that they are so thankful as the parents of these children.

“It is a great initiative and we are happy as it will help our learners get the necessary knowledge and success.

“Thank you to all the staff members and the donors for making sure our children’s needs are put first,” Kokwana says.
