Police say the complainant who is the child’s grandmother (61), reported the incident on Sunday after the child told her what had been going on.

“The complainant alleges that while she was at home, her grandchild told her that the grandfather called her to the bedroom last Thursday.
“At that stage it seems the grandmother had gone out to buy some vegetables.
“The old man allegedly put the child on the bed, removing the child’s pants and underwear.
“He then touched the child on her private parts and raped her,” says police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibuyi.

He adds that though it seems this was the first time a rape took place, the child says it was not the first time the old man touched her inappropriately.
The suspect is currently in police custody at the Modderbee Prison, while police are investigating further.
