Metro responds to dumped condoms complaint

KwaThema – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has responded to the African Reporter’s query regarding the 7 200 Choice condoms which were found dumped along Thema Road recently.

The Metro spokesman, Themba Gadebe says the City of Ekurhuleni is investigating the source of the government condoms found.

“We will be doing this through the batch number as condoms are distributed by a number to stakeholders such as NGOs, development partners, community health workers, private sector companies and clinics.

“The city condemns the dumping of these condoms, as it affects the municipal HIV/Aids response to the crisis since these condoms could have saved communities from contracting the virus or other sexually transmitted diseases.

“This is also wasteful expenditure for the municipality,” he says.

Gadebe adds that healthcare waste is only disposed of by the holder of a licensed authority which operates a hazardous waste site.

He therefore advises the public to immediately contact the municipality and not touch health waste materials as the waste may pose a healthcare risk.
