Clean City Brigade shares concerns

KwaThema – Two members of the Clean City Brigade in Ward 79 were shocked when they discovered a box of 7 200 Choice condoms which had been dumped along the side of Thema Road.

And though the condoms were unused, they were thrown not too far away from a primary school in the area.

“We have a lot of challenges which worries us and which must be dealt with for our children’s sake.

“Not so long ago we found needles close to another primary school and now we have found a box of over 7 000 unused government condoms.

“We discovered these last Tuesday morning after seeing two young children playing with them, thinking that they were balloons,” says Patrick Cindi.

Daniel Kgomo adds that they asked where the child had found the condoms and the children directed them to an open space along the busy road.

“Upon investigating further we discovered that the condoms only expire in 2019.

“These were also scattered along the road, which meant we had go picking all of them up,” he says.

The two men added that in another incident two weeks ago they had also stumbled upon some ARVs which had been dumped near another open space, while used nappies being thrown on the streets seems to have become a norm for the community.

“We are worried about the safety of our children because all this medical waste and things are being found dumped on open space and roads they use regularly.

“Children should not be exposed to such things at such a young age, it’s wrong!

“This is also a waste of government money, because we are always complaining that they don’t do much, yet when they do we as residents or their employees go and waste products provided for us,” says Cindi.

The two locals suggest that people should rather go to clinics to ask where to dump health waste rather than throwing it out on the streets.

“Government spends a lot of money on such things, such as free condoms and ARVs so people should use them wisely,” say Cindi and Kgomo.

Questions were sent to the Ekurhuleni metro regarding this matter, but there had been no response at the time of printing this paper.
