Couple fights off robber — robber attempts to open case at police station

KwaThema – A 44-year-old woman and her husband fought off an armed robber while he allegedly tried to attack them.

According to police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibuyi, the woman was with her husband when the unknown man, riding a red bicycle, stopped them on Friday evening at about 8pm along Maziya Street.

“The man took out a firearm and threatened the couple, demanding money while further instructing the couple to lie down.

“The husband then took out R20 to give to the robber while his wife got a chance to attack the man,” says Sibuyi.

As that was happening, the suspect’s firearm fell to the ground.

The woman continued to fight with the suspect and he bit her on the right hand.

The husband angered by this stood up and also fought with the robber to defend his wife.

“The woman trying to defend herself and her husband, went on to take a rock and hit the suspect, injuring him on the head.

“The community seeing what was happening came to assist the couple.

“The robber did however, manage to take off on his bicycle and the couple, went to submit the rock and the robber’s firearm to the Dunnottar Police Station.

“The evidence was later brought to us as this is a KwaThema case,” adds Sibuyi.

In a strange turn of events, police have also confirmed that the robber also went to the Dunnottar police to open a case, but since he was asked to go to the hospital first, he left his bicycle there and never returned.

Police are still investigating a case of armed robbery and pointing of a firearm.
