Definition of a student in action

Kwatsduza - As part of his book Action Learning Methods into why students fail, Prof Kennnedy Skosana this week unpacks the definition of a student in action.

Practical steps to follow to be a student in action:

• A student is a person who reads in order to know.

• To know is achieved by reading and stopping occasionally in order to think. During the thinking process, a student will analyse information, break information into parts, identify key words, symbols, examples, ideas, definitions or formulas and at the end make a key sketch.

• While analysing, a student will compare information with what he/she already knows.

• To compare requires a student to look for similarities and differences, and advantages and disadvantages.

• Students then synthesise information for understanding. At the point of understanding a student has to make a summary to list important facts.

• Thereafter set a test to test your recall of facts by an explanation, discussion or solving of a problem or by naming the characteristics.

A student who does the above stands a good chance to pass exams with flying colours.

At this stage a student needs to use previous question papers and practise to answer questions to determine the amount of information acquired, understood, remembered and applied in practical situations.

In subjects where calculations are done, a student has to study given examples.

A student who knows what to do learns effectively and becomes knowledgeable and improves their abilities.

“All students should practise the above to be successful in their education careers,” says Skosana.
