Penalties for overuse of water

Kwatsaduza - With the water crisis escalating in Gauteng, residents are expected to reduce their water consumption by 15% and households are not supposed to exceed the 25kl cap every month.

A 10% price increase will be imposed on households with a metered water consumption above 25kl per month, while institutions will face a 20% increase.

Businesses that fail to reduce consumption and exceed the 25kl cap will be slapped with a 30% increase.

According to the MMC of Water and Sanitation, Tiisetso Nketle, the Vaal River which supplies the province with water is under immense pressure and it has reached a point where drastic measures need to be taken.

Water consumption will be monitored closely via water meters and in the near future a line where people can call in when seeing wastage of water taking place, will be made available.

Communication with the public will take place, through campaigns and programmes to educate people about the importance of saving water and how they can monitor their water usage on a daily basis.

“If the public doesn’t follow the restrictions requested from the metro, we might have a huge crisis going forward, so we urge everyone to start doing their bit,” says Nketle.
