Celebrating Back Week

Tsakane – To create awareness on Back Week, between September 5 to 11, Phosolong Hospital recently turned its spotlight on back care education.

The physiotherapy department of the hospital took charge of the campaign and targeted both nursing staff and the public, educating them about back care.

Throughout the week, the team conducted educational presentations as well as demonstrations on lifting and transfer to nursing staff.

According to the department, studies about the prevalence of back pain in the nursing profession, show that a large number of nursing personnel suffer from backache due to incorrect posture and lifting of patients at work.

Back pain also affects the overall well-being of a person and limits participation in work, family and social activities.

People who suffer from persistent back pain have difficulty performing tasks, both at home and in the workplace, and this may have an impact on their livelihoods.

The department, however, adds that with proper care this condition can be managed and prevented.

Chief physiotherapist at the hospital, Matthews Selomo says: “Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, as well as retaining a proper posture can help prevent and manage back pain.

“And in most cases, back pain can go away on its own but when the pain is persistent and does not heal, it could be a sign of an underlying problem which should be checked out by a doctor.”

During the festivities, an aerobics session was organised for the staff as well as daily Pilates classes, focusing on back muscles.
