Locals celebrate Arbor week

KwaThema – Riverside Park in Tornado, KwaThema, will now boast trees to offer shade for the children who frequent the park on a regular basis.

Last Saturday, Thokozile Mabena (29), from Interchange Community Foundation, planted trees at the park, with the help of local children, to honour Arbor Week.

She says the park is a very important place for local children because it’s where they spend most of their time after school and during weekends, so she felt she should do something to ensure that it is safe and well kept.

“I run an aftercare centre and most of my learners make use of the park. The one thing they lacked was shade during hot summer days.

“To educate them about the importance of planting I saw fit to involve them, so we planted trees at their favourite park.

“Besides making the park more beautiful, planting trees has environmental benefits to the oxygen we breathe as a community,” she explains.

She will continue to plant trees in her community to commemorate Arbor Week going forward.

“We have planted fruit trees with the children so when they bear fruit, we will use the fruit to makes smoothies and jam to sell to develop the children’s entrepreneurial skills,’ she adds.
