Three die and two survive in container
KwaThema – Three men were found dead in a container while two others had to be take to hospital for medical treatment.
The men were discovered at around 3pm on Friday.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesman William Ntladi explains that the KwaThema rescue team drove out to Thema Road after being alerted by the community.
“The community called for help after wondering why the tuck shop wasn’t operating as usual since the morning.
“When DEMS arrived on the scene, we found five men inside the 25-metre container which was divided into two.
“The front of the container was used as a tuck shop while the other half was used as a sleeping room where the men were found,” he says.
It is believed the men might have died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
“Three of the men were declared dead by paramedics on the scene.
“The other two were given pre-hospital medical treatment before being taken to Pholosong Hospital for further medical treatment.
“Firefighters also discovered a charcoal braai stand inside the sleeping room, which might have been the cause of the poisoning,” he says.
