High-speed chase in Etwatwa ends with officer being shot

Etwatwa - A metro police officer from the Equestrian Unit sustained a gunshot wound to the neck inflicted by an aggressive driver in a VW Golf Five.

This followed a high-speed chase in Etwatwa on Tuesday afternoon, around 3pm.

EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago says the suspect was also shot and sustained fatal injuries.

“The metro police who were on a routine patrol spotted a suspicious-looking VW Golf Five and tried to stop it.

“The driver refused to stop and a high-speed chase ensued until the driver of the vehicle was cornered and stopped at the intersection of Chris Hani Drive and Madikizela streets.

“He then wrestled with one of the officers and in the process managed to grab the officer’s firearm, during which a shot rang out and the officer suffered a neck wound,” he says.

Kgasago adds the partner of the shot officer reacted swiftly, managing to shoot the aggressive driver who subsequently died of his injuries.

“Preliminary inspection of the vehicle pointed to the vehicle being cloned.

“In-depth investigations, however, are under way to verify whether it’s a fact or not the vehicle is duplicated.

“The injured officer was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment,” says Kgasago.
