The incident occurred at the informal settlement at around 7pm on Saturday.
Police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says it is believed the young man was attacked by the community on suspicion of stealing.
However, police are unsure of this allegation at this stage.
Ramphora has asked the community not to take the law into their own hands.
No arrests have been made in the murder investigation yet.
