Community urged to stop dumping

KwaThema - Illegal dumping is still one of the most persistent problems in most townships across Ekurhuleni.

KwaThema Customer Care Centre manager Andries Nkabinde appeals to the community of Ekuthuleni section in KwaThema to stop dumping in open spaces in the informal settlement.

This follows his shocking discovery, last week, when he visited the area and came across heaps of diapers in two open spaces.

“I was disgusted and concerned about such behaviour, because it causes a health hazard to children and residents in the area who live close by,” he says.

“Even though they don’t have waste removers coming into the section, all the houses have bins allocated to them, so there is no reason for such behaviour to be taking place.”

The informal settlement is also undergoing reblocking and development, so it’s imperative that residents play their role and keep the area clean.

Nkabinde states that development is needed in the area, because residents are still using the pit toilet system, a situation which is receiving attention as part of the new infrastructure that is being introduced.

He further discourages the illegal electrical connections that a minority of the residents are making.

“A shack that was set alight because of illegal connections, recently,” he says.

”For us to be able to work together with the community, we’d appreciate it if residents stop illegal activities.

“Such activities not only put their lives in danger, but are also hindering the current installation of electrical cables.”
