Community project celebrates one year

Tsakane – The We Can Do This community project celebrated its one-year anniversary over the weekend.

With celebrations taking place at the centre at 32074 Maphanga Street in Extension 12 of Tsakane, founder of the project, Matshidiso Silinda explained that she deals with teaching children who are mostly from three to 16 years old life skills in the community.

These children gather once a week for this purpose and some fun activities which keep them off the streets from 1pm to 4pm.

“I started this project after seeing the increasing number of children who were starting to smoking nyaope, of which I found most of them did it because of boredom as the lack of activities happening in our community.

“Though the children only attend on Saturdays, we teach them about respecting themselves and others, importance of education and how to take care of themselves and their talents.

“Currently we have over 70 active members who come because they enjoy what we do or who are sent by their parent,s while others see their friends come and then they join in,” she said.

The youngsters participated in some activities to entertain the community members who were present on the day.

Silinda further thanked the Tsakane Kyokushinkan Club and Love Life who supported the festivities, and one of the local supermarket staff who donated a huge cake.
