Building demolished in KwaThema

KwaThema -The five-shaft building which once posed danger to the community of KwaThema is currently being demolished.

The building which used to be a mine building back in the 1940s became a danger zone for community members as criminals and substance abusers used the building.

In 2014, the mine shaft situated next to the building was closed as residents feared for the safety of children.

Ward councillor Wilson Busakwe explains that he used to receive complaints from residents and schools that children and learners were being targeted by criminals who frequented the building in the mornings and evenings.

Some residents also used a route near the building to get to and from Extension Three.

“I’m happy that the building is finally being demolished and hopefully the crime rate in the area will reduce.

“Criminals also used the building to store their tools; we have found things belonging to zama zamas in the past and we saw that we are giving these people a place to do their illegal activities,” says the councillor.

Demolishing began last Friday and is expected to be completed by this Friday.
