School celebrates Youth Day

KwaThema - Sechaba Primary School hosted a fund-raising breakfast and June 16 commemoration event last Thursday.

Hosted at the Phelang LSEN School premises, the gathering united current and former learners, staff, former teachers and the community with the sole purpose of raising funds for the institution.

Some of the high profile guests present at the festivities included the first principal of the school, Borife Raborife, and retired teachers Joyce Ncokazi and Dorah Mohapi.

In addressing the guests, one of the former learners of the school, Keneilwe Podile (16), spoke on the plight that the class of ’76 fought for so she and others could have a better education.

She said that the struggle of the youth then was different than that of young people today and added that she is still determined to work hard, get a bursary and go to university.

Another speaker, Pastor Mapule More, encouraged guests to rise and be like David in the bible, who fought and did the unthinkable by defeating a big man like Goliath.

“As people we should look at all our challenges just as David did, with an attitude that we can move mountains,” she said.

Nick Jibilika, author of ‘What it Means to be a Black Man’, motivated guests to believe in themselves and be proud of where they come from, without being apologetic.

In closing of the celebrations, school principal Pearl More thanked the sponsors, the community and, especially, the former learners for the support they had given the school in organising this event.
