Locals encouraged to celebrate heritage

Kwatsaduza – A group of local traditional leaders and the traditional community of Kwatsaduza and surrounding areas are planning to host a Heritage Day celebration in September.

This is to help promote traditions and cultures of African people in the country.

“We have realised our people are no longer continuous of where they come from, where they presently are and where they are going.

“Our people are also gravitating more to the Western cultures and losing their traditions which is worrying, hence things are the way they are.

“During this event we plan to promote traditional attire, music and dance and we are hoping to create some form of competition where people can win prizes,” says Chief Thembinkosi Vazi Ngingi.

Though the plan is to do this on Heritage Day, Ngingi explains that the venue is not yet confirmed.

He adds they are hoping to attract people who will support the initiative.

“We are also calling upon children of traditional leaders from all walks of life to come forward and to work with us, as we see they are not coming together to promote their traditions, which we believe is part of what causes social ills.

“It is in our culture to respect and care for one another but this is no longer happening, which is why some of our people have lost their way.

“We need to go back to our traditions and celebrate our cultures,” urges Ngingi. Anyone interested in working together with the traditional leaders regarding the Heritage Day celebration can contact Ngingi on 083 883 6499 or Chief Elias Sikhosana on 073 874 3126.
