Metro feedback on meter leaks

Tsakane - Following the Tsakane meter disaster in Extension One, published in the African Reporter on June 10, the Ekurhuleni Metro has since responded to the query after its investigation.

In the initial story, some of the residents of Mahlabathini and Kulani streets had complained that newly installed water meters outside their yards by a contractor hired by the metro had left them with burst pipes and water flooding their yards.

The metro spokesman Themba Gabede, however, in his response shared that the Tsakane war on leaks project involved the repair and retrofitting of leaking plumbing fixtures inside the consumer properties as well as the installation of water meters, after the stands were tested and confirmed to be leak free.

“The repairs were a once-off opportunity since it is normally the responsibility of the home owner to repair their own leaking plumbing fixtures.

“The retention period for the repairs and retrofitting was three months.

“The home owners therefore had a three-month window period in which to report any problems that arose due to the repairs that were undertaken in their properties and this was also communicated to all households through the attached brochure,” he said.
