SAPS raises awareness on domestic violence

KwaThema - SAPS will host their second Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign at the KwaThema hall at the Civic Centre (previously known as HH Ngakane hall) at 10am, on June 24.

The aim of the campaign is to educate the community on domestic violence.

This campaign is a SAPS Provincial Intervention Task Team initiative and is part of a community project due to the increase of domestic violence in the area.

Several discussions on domestic violence will be conducted by representatives of the Department of Social Development, Justice Department, Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society, Provincial SAPS office and NGOs.

“The roots of domestic violence steam from alcohol abuse and financial problems in homes, which tend to cause conflict.

“We have decided to host campaigns in this regard to inform the community members, who fall victim to domestic violence, what they should do and where to the incident,” says W/O David Mhpali, police spokesman.

He claims most of their domestic violence cases are predominately take place in the Ekuthuleni informal settlement, but also in KwaThema in general.

SAPS urge the community to attend the campaign to learn more about abuse.

“You don’t have to be a victim of domestic violence, but if you are, you need counselling, especially women and children,” adds Mphali.
