Passengers hijack taxi, shot fired

KwaThema - Two passengers hijacked a Toyota Corolla in KwaThema on Friday.

Local police spokesman, W/O David Mphali, says the owner of the vehicle used his car as a taxi and picked up two men in Job Maseko Road at 7.30pm.

One of the men was sitting in the front while the other sat at the back the vehicle.

When the driver approached the intersection at the corner of Habede and Joe Mzamane streets, the passenger in the back seat pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the driver.

The driver managed to stop the vehicle after he was instructed to do so by the armed suspect.

“The suspect fired a shot through the open back window which led to the driver running away out of fear for his life,” says Mphali.

The suspect fired the shot in the air and no one was injured, but when the driver fled the scene, he left his cellphone behind and left the car keys in the ignition.

The two suspects drove off with the vehicle.

The police are investigating a case of hijacking and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with the information that may lead to the arrest of the hijackers should contact the W/O Det Sthembiso Mkhizi on 072 681 6821.
